My review of the small-group guided tour
Verdict: the best rating of the five bookings, on the smallest number of reviews. Eight people maximum, ninety minutes, entry included, in English. This is not a format for seeing more: it is a format for understanding what you see. In a building where you go from a 1550 arquebus to an 1806 uniform with no transition, that is worth a great deal.
What the guide changes
The Army Museum labels are excellent, and I say so all over this site. What they do not give you is a thread: why this room follows that one, what Visconti’s open crypt was meant to do to the visitor of 1861, why the body waited twenty years before coming in. The reviews of this tour all say the same thing, and it is not what people saw: it is what they understood.
The eight-person cap is not a marketing line in this particular building. Under the Dôme, which echoes, a large group forces the guide to raise their voice and stand in the middle; at eight you stay against the rail and speak almost quietly. It is also the format that lets you ask a question without having to announce it.

The second is duration, and it cuts both ways: ninety minutes is enough to narrate the Dôme and the Napoleonic story, but it covers neither the relief maps nor the two World Wars. Visitors who understand that stay on afterwards and finish alone. Those who leave when the commentary ends have seen a third of the site.
